MatSci Seminar: Purely Organic Emitters for OLEDs A Radical Future!

Here, we will discuss our recent theoretical work on two strategies to design e¿cient purely organic emitters: The first was introduced by Chihaya Adachi and co-workers in 2012, who proposed to harvest the triplet excitons in purely organic molecular materials via thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). These materials now represent the third generation of OLED emitters. Impressive photo-physical properties and device performances have been reported, with IQEs approaching 100%. The second and more recently applied strategy was proposed by Feng Li and co- workers in 2015 and is based on the exploitation of stable organic radicals. In these materials, when the lowest excited state and the ground state both belong to the doublet manifold, high e¿ciencies can also be obtained, see e.g. "High Stability and Luminescence E¿ciency in Donor-Acceptor Neutral Radicals Not Following the Aufbau Principle", Guo et al., Nature Materials, 18, 977-984 (2019).
